"Tackling b-lactam resistance in Staphylococcus aureus: novel mechanisms, strategies, and agents”

Guoqing studied Microbiology for his MSc and received his PhD in biochemistry from the institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. He then held postdoctoral positions in host-pathogen interaction research in several German institutes before being appointed as a group leader in the Institute for Microbiology and Infection Medicine University of Tübingen in 2011. In 2013 he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Manchester. His research has since focused on novel antibiotic resistance in Gram-positive bacteria and phage mediated horizontal gene transfer through the bacterial cell envelope.
Staphylococcus aureus is one of the major causes of bacterial infections, ranging from mild skin to life-threatening bloodstream infection. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) remains a serious problem threatening the global healthcare system. Innovative strategies are urgently needed to combat MRSA infection. In this seminar he will talk about the recent discovery of new ?-lactam resistance mechanisms by S. aureus and the development of new therapeutics against MRSA and other resistant bacteria in his group.
