How to do Topic Modelling using R
Oskar will provide a basic overview of how to use R to do 'topic modelling', focusing on applications within social science research. Topic modelling is a machine learning approach to thematic coding of text data, where 'topics' (or themes) are automatically and inductively extracted from multiple documents which in turn are coded using these topics. This can be seen as an automated analogue to inductive approaches to text analysis such as grounded theory, and is extremely useful as either a primary or supplementary analytical tool - especially when working with large text corpora, e.g. news articles, social media data or interview transcripts.
The seminar is aimed at those with a working knowledge of R, however, others are welcome to attend to learn about the method of topic modelling.
Speaker biography:
Oskar is a 3rd year PhD student doing his thesis on the communal and commercial manifestations of illicit drugs culture on the internet. Using big data and a range of innovative data analysis tools, he is trying to develop a quantitive parallel to the 'online ethnography' approach, in order to provide a different perspective on the role of the internet in shaping contempary trends in illicit drug consumption and trade.
