 \n\nNuclear and geopolitics: Reflections on dealing with hot topics at t
 he IAEA.\n\nThis talk will briefly recap on the history of the global nu
 clear system and will concentrate on the IAEA's involvement in several s
 ignificant geopolitical nuclear scenarios such as Ukraine\, Iran\, and F
 ukushima. This is part two of two talks delivered by guest speaker Mark 
 Basset.\n\n\nSpeaker\n\nMark Bassett FNucI CEng is an internationally re
 cognised nuclear professional and is currently a member of the Internati
 onal Nuclear Safety Advisory Group (INSAG).\n\nHe recently retired from 
 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after 8 years where he was
  a Director and the Special Assistant to the Director General for Nuclea
 r Safety\, Security and Safeguards – being DG Grossi’s closest advisor o
 n these issues and was the senior UK person at the Agency.\n\nHis role i
 ncluded dealing with\, and providing advice on\, a very wide range of co
 mplex technical\, diplomatic\, and political matters in these areas - fo
 r example in Ukraine and Iran.\n\nMark has held senior leadership roles 
 in the nuclear sector in the UK public and private sectors\, as well as 
 the international civil service\, and was Deputy Chief Inspector at the 
 Office for Nuclear Regulation for a number of years with over two decade
 s in ONR where he also held a wide range of roles across all nuclear sec
 tors.\n\nWhile in ONR he also worked extensively on international nuclea
 r issues\, including IAEA missions\, nuclear safety conventions\, and re
 presented the UK on safety standards committees.\n\nMark studied Physics
  at the University of Manchester.
