DESCRIPTION:Cities@Manchester\, with the New Local Government Network (NL
GN) and the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) invite you to jo
in us for the launch of Taking Power Back\, the new book by NLGN directo
r Simon Parker.\n\nOne of the key issues of our time is the question of
where power and governance should lie. Should they be centrally controll
ed\, drawing on efficiencies of scale and gathered knowledge? Or should
they be more locally distributed\, so that they more closely represent t
he actual needs of people and communities?\n\nIn "Taking Power Back\," S
imon Parker\, Director of think tank NLGN\, makes a powerful case for th
 e latter. Centralization\, he argues\, has been largely a failure\, bree
ding distrust among citizens who are beginning to take matters into thei
r own hands.\n\nOffering policy recommendations and practical suggestion
s\, Taking Power Back argues for a new kind of politics\, one that can f
ully unleash society's creative potential.\n\nThe evening will be introd
uced by Jim McMahon\, Leader of Oldham council\, followed by a discussio
n between Simon and Neil McInroy\, Chief Executive of the Centre for Loc
al Economic Strategies.\n\nFollowed by refreshments and informal discuss
ion. \n\nThis event is free to attend but please book your place via Eve
 ntbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/taking-power-back-manchester-lau
