DESCRIPTION:1-2pm. China is the most populous country in the world with a
  vast and diverse cultural landscape and a history that contains the roo
 ts of modern civilisation. This series of talks features speakers with s
 pecialist knowledge of China who cover diverse topics from literature to
  politics\, art\, recreation and economics with the aim of demystifying 
 contemporary China for a broad audience. \n\nHelen Tse’s debut novel Swe
 et Mandarin tells the story of three generations of Chinese women making
  their mark in Manchester\, beginning with her grandmother\, Lily Kwok\,
  the first woman to set up a restaurant in Manchester\, before Chinatown
  was established. When Sweet Mandarin was published in 2008 it became th
 e first ever novel by a British-born Chinese author to be published in t
 he UK.\n\nThe Confucius Institute at The University of Manchester is del
 ighted to welcome Helen to talk about her incredible family story and re
 ad extracts from her novel for this special event in conjunction with Ma
 nchester Histories Festival.
