DESCRIPTION:A public talk delivered by Dr. Richard D. Benson II (Spelman 
 College) titled 'Resistance Under the Crown: Black Education and Radical
  Activism in Britain\, 1965-1988.' This event is jointly organised by th
 e History Research Seminar and the Race\, Roots & Resistance Collective.
  \n\nSpeaker Bio: Richard D. Benson II is a historian specializing in ed
 ucation\, the Black Freedom Movement and transnational social movements.
  He completed a PhD in Educational Policy Studies specializing in the hi
 story of education at the University of Illinois. He is currently an Ass
 istant Professor in the Education Department at Spelman College in Atlan
 ta\, Georgia. He has received a number of grants and awards including th
 e UNCF/Mellon International Faculty Residency\, the New York Public Libr
 ary Fellowship and the UMass Amherst W. E. B. Du Bois Visiting Scholars 
 Fellowship. He is the award-winning author of Fighting for our Place in 
 the Sun: Malcolm X and the Radicalization of the Black Student Movement 
 1960-1973 (Peter Lang Publishing\, 2015)\,which is a text that examines 
 the linkages and inter-generational continuity of the Black Freedom Move
 ment that evolved from the social pedagogy and political influences of M
 alcolm X. Dr. Benson is currently working on a book manuscript entitled\
 , Funding the Revolution: Black Power\, White Church Money\, and the Fin
 ancial Architects of Black Radicalism 1966-1976 (State University of New
  York Press\, 2018).  Benson is also currently working on manuscript on 
 the Black freedom struggle in the United Kingdom entitled\, Resistance U
 nder the Crown: Black Education\, Protest and Radical Activism in Britai
 n 1965 - 1988.
