On 13th and 14th April the University of Manchester will be holding aninternational conference on Urban Informality. Confirmed speakers include Arif Hasan, Barbara Harriss-White, Debbie Potts, Soloman Benjamin, Kate Meagher, Paula Meth, Diana Mitlin and Clara Salazar.
Within the programme there is one dedicated session for PGR presentations, with scope for three presentations. We ask that presenters address issues of urban informality along economic, political or spatial dimensions, and particularly encourage submissions that explore academic gaps relating to theories of urban informality within that theme, and/or address contradictions within theory relating to informality or between theory and practice. Presenters will receive feedback on their work from an external discussant.
This is a call for abstracts, with an amended deadline of Monday 9th March. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and should be sent to nicola.banks@manchester.ac.uk and melanie.lombard@manchester.ac.uk. Abstract selection will be a competitive process and any PGR students from UK research institutions are encouraged to apply. Please make clear in your abstract which theme (political, economic or spatial informality) you are addressing and how your paper meets the conference’s objectives. Please note that full papers will be expected at the beginning of April to ensure that the discussant has sufficient time to read and engage with papers.
There will be a maximum of £100 travel/accommodation bursary for successful students coming from outside Manchester. Food costs (including a conference dinner on 13th) will be included.
