DESCRIPTION:The monthly Faculty Research Seminar Series is open to all st
 aff and students and offers an opportunity to celebrate FBMH’s research 
 achievements. \n\nHost: Cardiovascular\, Metabolic & Nutritional Science
 s\n\nDr David Bechtold\, Research Fellow: "Running out of time - the con
 sequences of circadian desynchrony"\nDavid completed a BSc and MSc in Ca
 nada\, before moving to King’s College London where he completed a PhD i
 n Clinical Neurosciences in 2005. David now works within the Division of
  Diabetes\, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology\, and holds a BBSRC David
  Phillips Research Fellowship. His laboratory is interested in the role 
 that our bodies’ internal timing system (circadian clock) plays in regul
 ating energy balance and cellular metabolism.  Work in the group ranges 
 from understanding the basic biology of appetite control and energy expe
 nditure\, to defining how the clock governs rhythms in glucose and lipid
  metabolism. In particular\, his laboratory details how disruption of th
 e circadian system contributes to metabolic and cardiovascular disease\,
  and how pharmacological targeting of the clock may serve as a novel the
 rapeutic strategy.\n\nProfessor David Ray\, Professor of Medicine and En
 docrinology: "Regulation of pulmonary immunity by the circadian clock"\n
 David graduated in medicine from Manchester in 1987\, before training in
  general internal medicine and endocrinology in the Northwest of England
 .  He completed a PhD in Manchester on endocrine aspects of small cell l
 ung cancer\, before moving to UCLA for a two year fellowship in neuroend
 ocrinology\, studying pituitary adaptations to inflammation.  He returne
 d to Manchester as lecturer before securing a fellowship from GSK which 
 supported the establishment of his independent group.  He now works on n
 uclear receptor and biological timing in relation to energy metabolism\,
  and inflammation.  He holds a Wellcome joint investigator award with lo
 ng-term collaborator and friend Andrew Loudon\, and is based in the AV H

 minar Series:\n\nThe monthly lunchtime Faculty Research Seminar Series i
 s open to all staff and students from across the Faculty of Biology\, Me
 dicine and Health and the University\, offering an opportunity to celebr
 ate the Faculty’s research achievement and stimulate scientific interact
 ion. \nEach event focuses on one of the eight strategic research domains
 .  Each month one of the Research Domain Directors selects two speakers 
 from within the Faculty to highlight and showcase an area of research in
  their domain.  There will usually be one senior speaker and one junior/
 early career researcher.  Speakers include clinical\, non-clinical and b
 asic science researchers.  Presentations are pitched at a non-specialist
  level\, as the series aims to attract people from across the Faculty. H
 eld on Wednesday lunchtimes each month\, each meeting lasts an hour\, co
 mprising two 20 minute presentations\, with each presentation being foll
 owed by 5-10 minutes questions and discussion. \n\nLunch is available 12
 .30-1pm\; presentations run 1-2pm. \n\nThe series is led by Professor Ni
 gel Hooper and administered from the Strategic Funding Team (by Lorna Ti
 ttle).\n
