The era of the smart city has arrived! Local authorities, small and medium enterprises, corporations, utility providers and civil society groups are using ICT to enhance collective urban services at the neighbourhood, city and regional scales. What does this mean for sustainability, resilience, and liveability? In this talk, Andrew Karvonen summarises findings from the forthcoming Routledge compendium Inside Smart Cities: Place, Politics and Urban Innovation to reveal how the smart agenda is changing urban development in fundamental ways.
