The Annual Fox Lecture is named in honour of Professor Harold Fox, one of the foremost histopathologists of his generation. Professor Fox was born in Manchester and spent his entire working life here. He made major contributions to our understanding and recognition of the diseased placenta and his 1978 monograph (with subsequent editions) `Pathology of the Placenta’ remains a must read text. Harold was also the founding editor of the journal `Placenta’ which remains the foremost international publication in the field. Professor Fox died in Manchester in 2012 and his wife, Augusta, subsequently made a very generous donation to the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre to fund an annual Fox Lecture to commemorate his contribution to placentology. The lecture is given by an international expert working at the frontier of the field.
This year the lecture is given by Prof Neil Sebire from Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Institute of Child Health UCL London, and is titled ‘PLACENTAL PATHOLOGY, EVIDENCE AND ERRORS’
Lecture: The clinical significance of the interpretation of pathological findings in the placenta remains difficult. This talk will highlight several of the areas of difficulty based on previous research including that performed with Prof Fox, and will then explore, with practical examples, how numerous errors in thinking apply too much of the literature regarding placental pathology interpretation.
