DESCRIPTION:The international workshop “Reconfiguring Divergence: Problem
s\, Methods\, Solutions” is a collaborative venture of the Centre for Ar
ea Studies and the World History Cluster within the Department of Histor
y at the University of Manchester. It joins researchers from across the
world who will address new questions\, viewpoints and methodological iss
ues relating to the ‘Great Divergence’ debate in the modern social and h
istorical sciences. An overview on the current state of the art will be
provided\, as well as many new case studies for individual countries. It
will become apparent that there are differing concepts and morphologies
of inequality and divergence\, as well as a strand of different narrati
ves relating to the causes and consequences of the “Great Divergence” th
at need critical re-appraisal.\n\nThe workshop will be opened by a publi
c lecture and keynote address by Professor Roy Bin Wong (University of C
alifornia\, Los Angeles\, USA) on the topic of “Economic Convergence and
the Persistence of Difference in the 19th Century”.
