The European Space Agency will launch its ‘PLATO’ satellite mission in 2024. PLATO will survey vast areas of the sky for long periods of time, gathering a huge amount of information on the light coming from stars. Its aim will be to identify stars like our own Sun that may have Earth-like planets in Earth-like orbits around them. These so-called ‘exoplanets’ will then become prime candidates for detecting signs of extraterrestrial life. Professor Andrew Norton will explain how exoplanets are discovered, how the PLATO mission will be unique and the scientific discoveries it will uncover.
