This talk centres on The University of Manchester staff’s research on slavery as both a historical and a contemporary form of abuse and exploitation.
It will consist of two presentations, followed by a question-and-answer period. Dr Natalie Zacek will talk about the University’s connections with transatlantic slavery, emphasising the links between its early founders and funders and a textile industry based on slave-grown cotton from the American South, and will discuss the University’s recent enquiries into this history and its plans for response to it.
Prof Rosemary Broad will talk about her ongoing research into human trafficking and modern slavery, including her work with Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and will explore the ways in which this form of criminal activity represents a modern variant of enslavement. Dr Zacek and Prof Broad will respond briefly to one another’s talks, and then open up the event to perspectives from the audience.
