DESCRIPTION:The talk will draw on the findings from ethnographic fieldwor
k research and film-making in Yorkshire\, to suggest how ethno science f
iction can be used as an ethnographic method by combining participatory
video with applied theatre. Ethno science fiction is a development of th
e ethnofiction of pioneering visual anthropologist Jean Rouch. While eth
nofiction draws on projective improvisation as an ethnographic film meth
od to explore past and present experiences of ethnographic significance
through co-creative expression and reflexivity\, ethno science fiction i
s exclusively concerned with the uncertainty of the future. The film met
hod refers to the popular film and literary genre to indicate the impact
the process of imagining an uncertain future has on present experience
and how the imagined narratives of the ethno science fiction can influen
ce the creation of strategies for the future.\n\nI will suggest how ethn
o science fiction can explore the process of anticipation\, hope and fea
r in relation to uncertainties of the future including environmental thr
eats in the everyday life of British youth. 'Science' has an additional
meaning in this context since scientists are predicting the long-term co
nsequences of climate change with increased accuracy. The imagined narra
tives of the future scenarios are thus generated in the tension between
the personal imagination of the participants and the predictions of the
scientists.\n\nThis seminar is presented by Dr Jonannes Sjoberg. Johanne
s is a lecturer in Screen Studies in Drama at the University of Manchest
er\, specialising in screen practice.\n\nBooking is essential via https:
