DESCRIPTION:\nRare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February ea
 ch year with events organised by patient groups all over the world. The 
 main objective of this day is to raise awareness about rare disease and 
 how it affects us all. Rare conditions may be rare individually\, but co
 llectively they are common. There are over 300 million people living wit
 h one or more of over 6\,000 identified rare diseases. \n  \nTHE WHITWOR
 TH GROUP\nThe Whitworth Group is an interdisciplinary group who regularl
 y meet at the Whitworth Gallery and who have combined expertise in psych
 ology\, genetic counselling\, narrative practices\, media and communicat
 ions. We have a shared interest in the definition of ‘rare’ and what thi
 s means to us all. This led to us developing “RARE” – a project funded b
 y the ESRC via the University of Manchester. The project includes a podc
 ast series and two lives events\; the first planned for Rare Disease day
  at the Whitworth Art Gallery. \n \nJoin us throughout the day at the ga
 llery when we explore what it means to be ‘Rare’. There will be games\, 
 activities\, treats\, exhibits from our RARE art competition and the opp
 ortunity to talk to scientists about what happens in a genetics laborato
 ry.  We will be recording a podcast at midday in the Great Hall – join u
