DESCRIPTION:This online workshop is aimed at researchers who are interest
ed in using and/or creating fictional texts in their work. Participants
will explore different ways in which researchers have used fictional tex
ts for data collection\, as analytic method and to share findings\, part
icularly focussing on work in the social sciences. We will examine some
practical\, epistemological and ethical rationales for using these metho
ds and also consider the challenges and pitfalls involved. Participants
will have an opportunity to read and critique some examples of sociologi
cal fiction from different genres. In addition\, the session will includ
e some practical advice on getting started and lots of chances to experi
ment with writing research-inspired fiction. No prior experience of writ
ing or using fiction in research is required but participants should com
e prepared to discuss ways in which they might like to use fiction in re
