SUMMARY:CIDRAL Workshop: Unmentionables: Conversations about the Obscene
UID:{http://www.columbasystems.com/customers/uom/gpp/eventid/}xux-iix1iut

DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CIDRAL's Semester 2 programme for the 2
015-16 academic year\, themed around Cultures and Temporalities.\n\nConc
ern over the social appropriateness or offensiveness of particular subst
ances\, artefacts or behaviours is a cultural commonplace. Everyday life
is considered by many cultures to contain elements which are unclear or
taboo\, often - but not exclusively - including bodily functions and bo
dily products and parts of the human anatomy (e.g. sex\, excrement and g
enitalia). These require amelioration through specific strategies such a
s hiding them from public view\, subjecting them to social or legal rest
riction\, or denying their existence altogether.\n\nThis workshop seeks
to unpack some of the issues surrounding this notion of 'obscene things'
across a range of different cultural contexts\, contemporary and histor
ical. The aim is to start an interdisciplinary conversation about topics
often under-discussed or distorted as a result of their perceived inapp
ropriateness\, with a view to future collaborative work.\n\nPlease regis
ter with Dr Amy Coker if you wish to attend: amy.coker@manchester.ac.uk\
n \nConvened by Dr Amy Coker (Leverhulme Postdoctoral Fellow in Classics
 \, University of Manchester).
