Animating the Future: amplifying youth voices through animation co-production
This talk explores the lives and imagined futures of children and youth who are facing critical social, economic and environmental challenges, but who feel unheard and unseen by wider society. Drawing on research conducted with Indigenous youth in the Amazon rainforest and with coastal children in the British South West, I propose an approach that centres youth perspectives through co-production of ethnographic animation (i.e. stop-motion films written by children & young people themselves). I examine the potential of ethnographic animation as a method that engages children & youth actively in the production and dissemination of knowledge, opening up a space where they can voice their concerns and bring into view the adulthoods they desire. My ultimate objective is to develop research that will not only examine radical processes of change affecting young lives across the world, but which will also establish pathways for change driven by the young participants themselves.
