The UK Data Service is holding a webinar on social aspects on the urban environment as part of a series showcasing research using new and novel forms of data.
This is a collaborative webinar involving Sarah King-Hele from the UK Data Service, Mark Livingston and Katarzyna Sila-Nowicka from the Urban Big Data Centre, at the University of Glasgow.
Sarah King-Hele will introduce Phase 2 of the Big Data Network and will highlight the research opportunities and potential of the data available through the Network.
Mark and Katarzyna will give an overview of the Integrated Multimedia City Data (iMCD) project. The iMCD involves the collection and collation of a wide range of data from social media, traffic sensors, CCTV, GPS, local newspapers and other sources in Glasgow. Together, this information will create a detailed picture of mobility and the local environment in the city.
An innovative aspect of the project is that it combines this information with thousands of primary surveys on literacy, travel, stated preferences and an Attitude, Beliefs and Lifestyle Survey. The effort will also allow us to compare and contrast results from extracted structured and unstructured data with data from a statistically representative sample of respondents who are administered a battery of social science surveys. This will provide a more complete analysis of the complex links between behaviour, social background and daily routine among city residents.
The research aims to provide planners, local authorities and other stakeholders with a valuable and accessible data source. The integration of information on lifestyle and other individualized factors such as education will also support the development of targeted behavioural interventions to positively influence wellbeing.
The webinar will consist of a 30 minute presentation followed by questions.
