SUMMARY:Urbanisation\, Infrastructures and Everyday Life

DESCRIPTION:Keynote speakers:\n\nProf Em Clara Greed (UWE)\nDr Christoph
 Luethi (EAWAG)\nProf Nicholas Rose (King's College London)\nDr Farhana S
ultana (Syracuse)\n\nCountries undergoing rapid urban transformations ex
perience shifts in various infrastructural systems. However\, there are
explicit tensions between the apparent need to develop national infrastr
uctures and the possible implications that this may carry for human heal
th\, social relations and environmental sustainability. For instance\, u
nequal access to urban infrastructure – from sanitation to communication
  – can lead to stratified health outcomes. Differing everyday practices
associated with competing coexisting infrastructures can result in exclu
sion and isolation of already marginalised groups. Resource-intensive an
d polluting modern infrastructures can trigger the degradation and loss
of ecosystems and their services. \n\nThis conference invites contributi
 ons concerned with: \n\n- the design\, planning\, implementation\, maint
enance and use of urban infrastructures (including\, but not limited to\
 , sanitation\, transportation\, health care and education)\; \n- the soc
 ial meanings underpinning infrastructural systems and their processes\;
\n- the wider environmental effects of urban infrastructures\; and \n- t
he human well-being outcomes of urban infrastructural transitions (publi
c health in particular).\n\nWe are interested in systems approaches and
perspectives that place everyday life at the centre and take into accoun
t multiple scales (from the human body to the global climate)\, critical
resources and human social systems to understand and address infrastruc
ture challenges. Whilst we are particularly interested in contributions
with focus on East Asia\, we welcome contributions on other experiences
or comparative studies from other regions where they fit with the confer
ence themes. \n\nThe conference will explore research\, policy and praxi
s on all aspects of infrastructures\, their development and outcomes\, i
ncluding – but not limited to – the following:\n\n- Urban infrastructure
s and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): e.g.\, water\, sanitatio
n\, waste\, or related systems across varying spatial scales \n- Uses an
 d experiences: everyday practices\, individual and group experiences\, w
ell-being outcomes\n- Design and planning: circulating knowledges\, poli
 cy mobilities\, development paradigms\, cultural bias\, global/local rel
ationships\, politics and power\n- Implementation and maintenance: finan
 ce\, resources\, models\n- Transdisciplinarity: conceptual frameworks\,
research design and methodologies\n- Perspectives on urban socio-technic
al relations which exceed\, or bring together\, individual infrastructur
al sectors and systems (transportation\, water\, etc.)\n- East Asian and
comparative case studies: historic and contemporary accounts \n- Activi
st and community praxis\, including decolonising approaches to infrastru
 ctural development\, urban change\, and resource/waste management \n- Ed
ucation and dissemination: strategies\, tactics and lessons learned\n\nT
imeline\n\n- Deadline for abstract submission: 30 September 2018\n- Earl
 y bird & speaker registration: 15 November 2018 – 15 January 2019\n- Con
ference: 1-3 May 2019\n\nThis conference is generously supported by the

ing and Urbanism at the Manchester School of Architecture\; the Confuciu
s Institute at the University of Manchester\; the Sustainable Consumptio
n Institute at the University of Manchester\; and Beijing Normal Univers
ity. \nIt is held under the auspices of Manchester Urban Institute.\n
