e branding through leveraging innovation discourses in the case of Alfre
 d Noel's Karlskoga\n\nAbstract:\n\nWe consider a place branding effort i
mplemented as part of a wider strategy for regional development in “Alfr
ed Nobel’s Karlskoga”\, a small Swedish city. The municipality has place
d its most famous former resident\, Nobel\, and his innovations\, at the
heart of its economic development strategy with a three pronged target
of attracting tourists\, business\, and residents to the town through al
igning city branding efforts with significant new infrastructural develo
pments. We present an in-depth qualitative case study which unpacks this
unique place branding effort: we examine the tensions and complexities
surrounding this process\, and fill an existing research gap around inno
 vation-based place-branding.\n__\n\nSpeaker Bio:\n\nRhiannon Pugh is a S
enior Lecturer in Innovation studies at CIRCLE Lund University. Rhiannon
is currently working on a three year project funded by the research age
ncy FORMAS studying innovation policy in the periphery. This project aim
s to explore the barriers and opportunities to enhance sustainable and i
nclusive economic development through innovation in peripheral areas\, a
nd also to enhance our understanding of such regions within economic geo
graphy. \n\n__\n\nThe Manchester Institute of Innovation Research runs a
series of regular seminars given by visiting speakers to Manchester. Th
ese seminars are open to anybody who is interested in science\, technolo
gy and innovation policy and management.\n\n
