Join us for the latest history external speaker research seminar. The significance and the distinct place of ritual are well known aspects of Chinese history. This paper, however, offers a fresh perspective by exploring the subject through the lens of horses and the intersection of human and animal worlds in state practice. By examining an imperially commissioned text of shamanic rituals inscribed in the eighteenth century, this paper sheds light on equine ritual at the Qing court, including the way in which medical and spiritual care were intertwined.
