DESCRIPTION:Geoff Ward\, University of California\, Irvine.\n\nThis talk 
 foregrounds over a century of effort to document racial violence\, and i
 ts contributions to critical analysis\, oppositional movements\, targeti
 ng social services\, and other remedial effort. Represented most notably
  by Ida B. Wells’s 1895 pamphlet A Red Record\, which proved key to the 
 crusade against lynching\, these data gathering\, analysis\, and leverag
 ing efforts have sought to clarify and counter threats to African Americ
 ans' and others' life chances. \n\nThe Red Record is at base a recogniti
 on of black human and civil rights\, a moral and political assertion tha
 t “black lives matter\,” which was directed at the national conscience b
 ut targeted specific environments of normative disregard\, challenging p
 olitical leaders to ensure equal protection. This Record and documentati
 on efforts since continue to inform critical analyses of race as a socia
 lly constitutive force\, and reveal legacies of racial violence in conte
 mporary social relations. These contributions notwithstanding\, there ar
 e great challenges to measuring racialized violence\, interpreting impac
 ts\, and translating insights into pragmatic remedial effort. The Red Re
 cord is a contested empirical account\, inevitably incomplete\, and frau
 ght with tensions related to criteria\, accuracy\, and meaning. \n\nThe 
 talk explores some of these challenges and strategies for overcoming the
 m in the context of my ongoing work with many collaborators to build a R
 acial Violence Archive\, and realize its research\, educational\, and re
 medial potential. \n\nAll welcome.
