DESCRIPTION:The Informal Applied Mathematics seminar will continue with a
  double bill from Robbie Bancroft and Ben Calverley. Talks will take pla
 ce in Frank Adams 2 (next to the Alan Turing Building's kitchen)\, with 
 complimentary hot drinks and biscuits from 2.45pm on the atrium bridge.

 ft: Dimensionalanalasis in granular flow\n\nAbstract: This talk begins w
 ith a video of an explosion and is almost entirely free of equations. We
  will explore the concept of dimensional analysis and use it to briefly 
 examine the rheology (stress vs strain) of granular materials. Then usin
 g similar techniques\, I will explain some of my recent work on granular
  segregation problems.\n\n\nBen Calverley: Modelling tendon mechanics fr
 om electron microscopy \n\nAbstract: In tissues like tendon\, collagen f
 orms packed bundles or fascicles of approximately cylindrical fibrils\, 
 and in mice the tendon fibril size is diurnally rhythmic. What mechanica
 l effects and/or properties does the fibril arrangement bring to the ten
 don? We use micro-scale electron microscopy imaging data to analyse and 
 predict macroscopic tendon functions such as viscoelasticity through flu
 id mechanical approaches and discrete networks.\n\n\nFYI: The Informal A
 pplied Seminar is a weekly seminar for all applied mathematics students 
 in the department. We get together on a Friday afternoon for students to
  speak about what they're working on at the moment. It's not formal - le
 cturers and staff don't attend - so it can be a good place to get feedba
 ck on your talk before an upcoming conference or just good to practise f
 or public speaking in general. We generally meet on the bridge (outside 
 the Alan Turing building first-floor kitchen) 15mins before the start an
 d head to Sandbar for a drink afterwards.
