In this presentation I will draw on current and previous research projects on trajectories and transitions in mathematics education. I will focus on the surveys and questionnaires we developed for these projects in order to demonstrate how we create and use ‘measures’ of students’ attitudes and dispositions as well as teachers’ pedagogical styles. Particular examples will be provided for the different stages of our methodological framework, involving (a) instrument/questionnaire development, (b) measure construction and validation, and © (statistical) model building. Emphasis will be given to the validation of measures and how this is achieved within the Rasch Measurement perspective.
