DESCRIPTION:Part of the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies s
eminar series.\n\nAbstract: The national literatures of the Guianas\, wh
en contrasted with Amerindian oratures\, present some striking continuit
ies. Departing from the recurrent use of the regionally specific Amerind
ian notion of kanaima\, the analysis of chosen literary texts reveals th
eir aesthetic projects within literary tradition. Although produced in d
ifferent time/spaces and using a variety of methods\, these fictional li
teratures present the same underlying objective: to challenge the establ
ished canon and current national culture by including Amerindian practic
es and philosophies. They propose a modern and singular national identit
y based on principles of difference. Going through the research outcome
of each country studied – Guyana\, Suriname\, Venezuela and Brazil – the
presentation aims to draft a comparative literary panorama of the regio
n\, under the light of ethnographic accounts.\n
