Drs Kun Yan and Simon Hunt from the Department of Materials, The University of Manchester will co-present this seminar.
Dr Kun Yan has accumulated some experience using synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques to investigate the phase transformation and strain analysis of advanced alloys under both ambient environment and extreme temperatures and loading conditions. Dr Simon Hunt uses synchrotron radiation to examine the physical properties of Earth forming rocks and minerals at extreme pressure and temperature conditions.
In this presentation, Kun and Simon will start from the basics of diffraction and the types of crystallographic information extracted from the diffractometers. Followed by how these information correlated to the data analysis of phase identification, strain and anisotropy. Examples on natural
geologic materials and engineering materials will be given to demonstrate the strength of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction. At the end, we will address the advantage and challenges for in-situ and in-operando diffraction experiments at the central facilities at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), as well as the sample environment capacity and support from The University of Manchester at Harwell (UoMaH).
This is the ninth seminar in The University of Manchester at Harwell Ideas Forum Imaging series. The aim of this series is to increase networking of academics and researchers across the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the National Laboratories. In doing so, we hope to share expertise and support new collaborations and grant applications.
This seminar will be recorded and available to watch after the event. A zoom link will be sent to attendees the day before the seminar.
