 ord) will deliver a public lecture entitled ‘Public Secrecy in Contempor
 ary China: Ducking the Firewall’.\n\nTank Man\, the über-image of the Ti
 ananmen Square protests of 1989\, has been repurposed endlessly in the q
 uarter of a century since the crackdown. These remediations of that orig
 inal photograph have often taken the form of political cartoons\, memes 
 and YouTube remixes\, which circulate broadly outside China. In China it
 self\, though\, Tank Man has been largely monitored out of online sight\
 , and the digital artists who have repurposed his image in recent years 
 are typically so harried by the censors that their work cannot hope to e
 ndow him with mass viral visibility\, let alone the iconic status he pos
 sesses abroad. But precisely because of their fugitive character – which
  produces audiences who are alert and on the qui vive – these remediatio
 ns ensure that Tank Man remains the grit in the clam of public secrecy a
 bout 1989\, and most particularly when they take the form of augmented r
 eality art.
