DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Jewish Studies seminar programme has an Israel
  Studies theme. Our seminar programme is open to all (for free) and ther
 e is no need to book.\n\nAhad Ha'am (the pen name of Asher Ginsberg\, 18
 56-1927) is remembered as 'the father of cultural Zionism'\, an epithet 
 that tends to consign him to the past and locate him solely in relation 
 to Theodor Herzl and political Zionism. The speaker is interested in tak
 ing him out of his historical box and reading him as a resource for thin
 king about the future. His (ambiguous) secularism\, his project of Jewis
 h revival\, his view of life in the Diaspora\, and his overall vision of
  Judaism\, with justice at its heart\, have a strong bearing on predicam
 ents we face today. He shall approach these topics via an introduction t
 o his life\, reflecting on the meaning of his pen name: 'One of the Peop
 le'.
