Contemporary Manchester continues to exhibit a perplexing mix of on-going decline and dynamic transformation. While the narrative of success tends to dominate urban discussions, only its most zealous advocates would claim that the work is done, that the deep-seated processes of inequality and division have been arrested and reversed. In essence, the regeneration and restructuring of Manchester continues to be a work in progress.
The aim of this one-day workshop is to provide an opportunity for urban researchers at the University of Manchester to share their findings on Manchester and the surrounding city region. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, 4 March 2015 from 9:30 to 16:30 at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation (a short walk from campus). The workshop is open to everyone and is free of charge, but please register your place via Eventbrite: http://transformingmanchester.eventbrite.co.uk/
Lunch and tea/coffee will be provided.
This event builds on previous Urban Transformation workshops to support an interdisciplinary dialogue on the empirical and theoretical insights that are being generated from Manchester-based research projects. The workshop will be organised around broad themes such as:
- Ageing and community
- Cosmopolitanism, identity and difference
- Education, class and inequality
- Governance and regeneration
- Place-making and design
- Sustainability and climate change
- Transport and mobility
