DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Beth Romano\, KCL\n\nTitle: Graded Lie algebras and
families of algebraic curves\n\nAbstract: Graded Lie algebras give a un
iform approach to many questions in arithmetic statistics. Motivated by
these questions\, I'll give a construction of graded Lie algebras from c
ertain Heisenberg groups. This construction has number-theoretic consequ
ences: it can be applied to certain Mumford-theta groups to give informa
tion about families of algebraic curves. And it has nice Lie-theoretic a
pplications: for example\, it gives a way of lifting elements of Weyl gr
oups to automorphisms of Lie algebras. I won't assume prior knowledge of
graded Lie algebras or arithmetic statistics\, and will give examples t
hroughout the talk.\n\nThis is a joint seminar with number theory.\n\nTe
