 ies. It begins within the fine neo-gothic architecture of the University
 ’s Old Quadrangle and tells the story of Owens College\, which would bec
 ome England’s first civic university.\n\nFounded from the philanthropy o
 f wealthy Manchester merchants\, Owens College captured the energy and s
 pirit of the industrial revolution. Its successor\, the Victoria Univers
 ity of Manchester\, helped establish the style of the modern university 
 with its secularist approach and pursuit of research alongside teaching.
 \n\nThe tour traces the development of the University into the twentieth
  century and visits key sites of discovery including where Ernest Ruther
 ford first split the atom and where Alan Turing helped lay the foundatio
 ns of modern computing. \n\nThe tour is outside and lasts around 1 hour.
