DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CIDRAL's Spring 2017 programme 'Precari
ty'.\n\nMike Savage (Martin White Professor of Sociology\, London School
of Economics) will deliver a lecture entitled 'The Politics of Social I
nequality in the 21st Century' followed by a roundtable discussion.\n\nF
ocusing on his research on the Great British Class Survey and the Nation
al Child Development Survey\, Mike will discuss the changing nature of s
ocial inequality in the UK. He will argue that conventional class based
approaches focusing on the tensions between capital and labour need to b
e supplanted by attention towards a 'politics of accumulation'\, where i
ssues of class\, gender\, family\, community and race intersect in power
ful ways. He will show how this perspective allows us to register the si
gnificance of the pulling away of the elite and the blurring of class bo
undaries in the middle reaches of the social structure. He will also exp
lore how these changes are associated with the rise of political populis
m and nationalism\, and reflect on the remaking of virulent forms of cla
ss politics which are likely to intensify in the coming years.\n\n
