DESCRIPTION:Manchester Social Statistics Seminars 2021/22 – March Session
\n\n\nMeasuring and understanding migration of scholars: Evidence from b
ibliometric data\n\nEmilio Zagheni (Max Planck Institute for Demographic
Research)\n\nJoin us at 4pm (GMT) on 1 March 2022!\n\nRegistration link

and your email address.\n\n \nAbstract\n\nMigration of scholars is a maj
or driver of innovation and of diffusion of knowledge. We leverage bibli
ometric data\, indexed by Scopus (for over 36 million journal articles a
nd reviews) to develop a novel and global database of scholarly migratio
n (1998-2017)\, where migration events are inferred from changes in auth
ors’ institutional affiliations over time. In this talk\, I will present
how we developed the longitudinal database on internal and internationa
l movements of scholars\, offer descriptive statistics for trends over t
ime\, as well as show initial results from our statistical analyses to i
dentify and quantify drivers of geographic mobility of talent. \n\nAbout
the speaker\n\nEmilio Zagheni is the Director of the Max Planck Institu
te for Demographic Research (Germany) and he leads its Laboratory of Dig
ital and Computational Demography. In these roles\, he has facilitated t
he collaboration of demographers\, statisticians\, and computational soc
ial scientists in order to better understand demographic phenomena. His
recent research focuses on combining social media and other digital trac
e data with traditional information sources to identify and understand p
atterns of migration.\n\n\nFor regular updates on our events\, sign up t
