labour market is structurally precarious and featured by high rates of i
llness and extreme forms of labour exploitation. While there is labour p
rotection legislation that is reasonably protective\, despite being unde
r attack in recent decades\, it remains largely disregarded by employers
. Considering this picture\, the State has taken some actions -some of t
hem recent- that seek to increase the effectiveness of labour protection
standards and improve living conditions\, particularly regarding the id
entification and prevention of occupational illnesses and the creation o
f life options for victims of contemporary slave labour.\n\nIn his talk\
, Dr Vitor Filgueiras will present the innovative and multidisciplinary
programs aiming at fighting labour exploitation and modern slavery in Br
azil: Caminhos do Trabalho (‘Paths to Work’) and Vida Pós Resgate (‘Life
After Rescue’) programs\, coordinated by the Ministry of Labor through
a network of Brazilian public institutions. Caminhos do Trabalho builds
on a network of public universities to assist workers victims of work-re
lated illnesses\, providing medical\, legal\, and psychological assistan
ce. Vida Pós Resgate promotes the training of rural production cooperati
ves with workers rescued from conditions amounting to modern slavery in
their places of origin. This program uses resources from the court fines
paid by abusive employers.\n\nSPEAKER\n\nDr Vitor Filgueiras is the fou
nder and Project Coordinator of the Caminhos do Trabalho (‘Paths to Work
’) and Vida Pós Resgate (‘Life After Rescue’) programs at Fundacentro (M
inistry of Labor)\, and Professor of Economics at the Federal University
of Bahia (UFBA).\n\nHe is an economist and social scientist with a glob
al academic expertise\, and professional expertise in bridging policy\,
practice\, and academia. He held visiting positions at institutions such
as the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Californi
a\, Irvine. He has served as a senior scholar at UFBA\, where he also co
ordinated the Postgraduate Program in Economics\, and has played a key l
eadership role in the Brazilian Association for Labor Studies (ABET). He
was also a Labor Inspector for Brazil’s Ministry of Labor from 2007-201
7\, which ground his interest in addressing exploitation and poor workin
 g conditions.\n\n---\n\nACCESSIBILITY\n\nIf you have any accessibility-r
