DESCRIPTION:This event is a part of the Community Festival held at the Un
iversity of Manchester.\n\nThis tour takes visitors on a journey from th
e beginnings of England’s first civic university to the sites of world c
hanging discoveries. It begins within the fine neo-gothic architecture o
f the University’s Old Quadrangle and tells the story of Owens College\,
which would become England’s first civic university.\n\nFounded from th
e philanthropy of wealthy Manchester merchants\, Owens College captured
the energy and spirit of the industrial revolution. Its successor\, the
Victoria University of Manchester\, helped establish the style of the mo
dern university with its secularist approach and pursuit of research alo
ngside teaching.\n\nThe tour traces the development of the University in
to the twentieth century and visits key sites of discovery including whe
re Ernest Rutherford first split the atom and where Alan Turing helped l
ay the foundations of modern computing. \n\nThe tour is outside and last
 s around 45 minutes.\n\nPlease book here: https://community-fesitival-sp
