To mark LGBTQ+ history month, we are hosting a takeover of the 'Wild' exhibition to explore and build solidarity around LGBTQ+ representation, access and experiences in nature and the wild.
During the evening you can explore interactive stalls, museum objects and drop in activities positioned throughout the exhibition, and be introduced to Queer Ecology with a talk by ecologist, researcher and writer Jasmine Qureshi. This will be followed by a Q&A and panel discussion chaired by Manchester Museum's Social Justice Manager, Chloe Cousins.
What is Queer Ecology?
Queer Ecology explores the ways nature exists outside of our social constructs of gender, sexuality and other binaries. It is about disrupting the power structures that have shaped our understanding of the natural world and building empathy and understanding amongst each other and the multitude of species that we share this planet with.
Activities on the evening will include:
Queer Ecology talk with ecologist and writer Jasmine Qureshi
Out Here, Our Way: Mapping the Queer Future of Outdoor Access with Ailish Breen, Queer Out Here
Community building with Cara Powell, MUD CIC / Queer Roots Collective
Queering Land Justice with Right to Roam GM
Nature writing workshop
Museum object handling - highlighting objects from our collections that speak to LGBTQ+ histories, culture and movements
Programme:
6-7pm - stalls and activities in the Wild exhibition
7-8pm - Queer Ecology talk and panel discussion
8-9pm - continue conversations and enjoy more time to explore the Wild exhibition, until the museum closes at 9pm
The Museum Cafe will be open throughout the evening.
