DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Taibat Lawanson\, University of Liverpool\n\nAfrican
cities are leveraging opportunities inherent in globalisation and the d
igital turn to adopt new ways of city-making. Recently\, the ‘smart city
’ concept and the platform economy have been prominent in Lagos\, Nigeri
a’s primate city. Lagos’ ambition for world- class status has driven sta
te-endorsed implementation of ‘urban innovation’\, but with unintended c
onsequences on everyday people. In this talk\, I will focus on how the s
mart city and platform economy models are disrupting housing and transpo
rtation sectors in Lagos\, as well as upturning citizen-led social safet
y mechanisms.\n\nTaibat Lawanson is Leverhulme Professor of Planning & H
eritage at University of Liverpool\nShe leads the Urbanism and Coastal H
eritage Lab at the Architecture Heritage and Urbanism in Western Africa
Research Centre (AHUWA) at University of Liverpool.\n
