ssically defined for finite groups over a field of positive characterist
ic and has become a key tool in modular representation theory. We will s
how how we can define a suitable stable category over a large class of i
nfinite groups. These groups were originally defined by Kropholler and t
heir representation theory is in some sense controlled by the finite sub
groups. We will use this to show how to extend various classification th
eorems known for finite groups (due to Benson\, Iyengar\, Krause\, and P
evtsova) to these infinite groups.
