DESCRIPTION:Professor Robert Gibbs recently completed a 10-year term as I
naugural Director of the Jackman Humanities Institute and Professor of P
hilosophy at the University of Toronto. He served a member of the Intern
ational Advisory Board of CHCI (Consortium of Humanities Centers and Ins
titutes)\, and was a member of the Governing Council of the Social Scien
ces and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and Chair of its P
rograms and Quality Committee.\n\nHis current research focuses on Higher
Education\, and has recently completed a book length manuscript\, The U
niversity in Question: Ideas in Dialogue. In it he inquires what a Resea
rch University is for and explores different models of universities by r
efocusing on the research capacities of students.\n\nHis previous resear
ch is located on the borderlines of Philosophy and Religion\, with a com
parative and historical focus on Law and Ethics. He has worked on Ethics
in relation to the modern Jewish philosophical tradition and has numero
us publications in this and in related fields in continental philosophy\
, including two books\, Correlations in Rosenzweig and Levinas and Why E
thics? Signs of Responsibilities. \n\nThe seminar will explore ideas abo
ut universities in order to reimagine the research university. Two key t
hemes will guide the discussion: \n1.	At a Research University\, every s
tudent should be learning how to do research (three ideas: knowledge\, c
ritique\, inquiry)\n2.	The Civic University should become a permeable un
iversity—where the questions arise in society and the knowledge within t
he university has exchanged with knowledge in the city in pursuit of new
insight. (two ideas: freedom and responsibility)\n
