DESCRIPTION:This week's AAGP speaker is Professor Jonathan Craig\, Senior
  Vice President\, Exploration Strategies & Professional Areas\, ENI\n\nT
 he horizontal & multi-lateral wells and high-pressure hydraulic fracturi
 ng\n technologies used to develop and produced from today’s ‘unconventio
 nal’ oil \nand gas fields are neither new\, nor ‘unconventional’. The fi
 rst deliberately non-vertical \nor ‘deviated’ wells were drilled in the 
 1930s and the first artificially stimulated (‘fractured’)\ngas well was 
 completed in the Devonian Marcellus Shale in Fredonia\, New York State\,
  in 1857. \n\nThis presentation traces the development of drilling techn
 ologies from the earliest onshore wells \npioneered by the Chinese in th
 e 4th century BC\, to the modern techniques of drilling offshore\nin dee
 p and ultra-deep water and in high-temperature/high pressure and ultra-d
 eep subsurface \nenvironments. It examines the progressive development o
 f directional drilling\, driven by legal \ndisputes over the production 
 from adjacent oil leases in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, the
  \nestablishment of horizontal drilling capabilities in the 1980s and th
 e progressive development of well \nstimulation techniques as a result o
 f advances in explosives and weapons technologies during the \nAmerican 
 Civil War and the subsequent two World Wars. It also addresses the devel
 opment of the \nrevolutionary hydraulic fracturing (fracking) technology
  required to produce oil and gas from ultra-low \npermeability reservoir
 s\, the technical and environmental challenges of this technology and it
 s\nbroader implications for future global energy supply.
