This paper will examine the attempts of British conscientious objectors to 'live at peace' in the midst of the Second World War. The paper is based on archival research and oral histories interviews with former COs and their families. It addresses the role of sacrifice in liberal democracies, the relationship between violence and non-violence, and the ethics of apparently utopian political projects.
