DESCRIPTION:What factors brought about quick and peaceful collapse of the
  Soviet Union?\nIn my presentation I reappraise the role of such often-m
 entioned factors as the nationalist mobilization\, falling oil prices\, 
 the August 1991 coup\, Ukrainian independence\, and the role of Yeltsin'
 s policies and choices. I conclude that three factors doomed the USSR. F
 irst\, the political struggle between Yeltsin and Gorbachev. Second\, th
 e destruction of central Soviet financial system. Third\, the relations 
 of Russia and other «sovereign republics» with the United States. The pr
 esentation is based on archival research and interviews.
