DESCRIPTION:\nThe 2018 Pankhurst Lecture will be delivered by \n\nThe Rig
 ht Honourable The Baroness Hale of Richmond DBE PC FBA \n\nand is entitl
 ed:\n\n2018 – A Year of Anniversaries\n\n2018 is the anniversary of many
  significant dates for women in \npublic life – they got the right to st
 and for Parliament in 1918\, some also got the right to vote in 1918\, \
 nthe rest got the right to vote in 1928\, and they got the right to sit 
 in the House of Lords \nin 1958. But it took until 2004 for a woman to s
 it in the highest \ncourt in the land and we are still a long way from r
 eal gender \nequality. So why is that? Is patience the answer or do we n
 eed to be more active?\n\nWe are delighted to welcome Brenda Marjorie Ha
 le\, Lady Hale of Richmond and President of the \nSupreme Court\, back t
 o the University where she taught law from 1966 to 1984. \n\nLady Hale t
 ook up appointment as President of The Supreme Court in September 2017\,
  following her appointment \nas Deputy President from June 2013. In Octo
 ber 2009 she became the first woman Justice of The Supreme Court.\n\nIn 
 January 2004\, she became the United Kingdom’s first woman Lord of Appea
 l in Ordinary after a varied career as \nan academic lawyer\, law reform
 er\, and judge.\n\nIn 1984 she was the first woman to be appointed to th
 e Law Commission\, a statutory body which promotes the \nreform of the l
 aw. Important legislation resulting from the work of her team at the Com
 mission includes the \nChildren Act 1989\, the Family Law Act 1996\, and
  the Mental Capacity Act 2005. She also began sitting as an assistant re
 corder.\n\nIn 1994 she became a High Court judge\, the first to have mad
 e her career as an academic and public \nservant rather than a practisin
 g barrister. In 1999 she was the second woman to be promoted to the \nCo
 urt of Appeal\, before becoming the first woman Law Lord.\n\nChristabel 
 Pankhurst was a suffragette and leading figure in the Women's Social and
  Political Union. \nShe obtained a First Class degree in Law from The Un
 iversity of Manchester\, but\, as a woman\, was unable to practise as a 
 barrister. \n\nThe School of Law founded the Pankhurst Lecture to commem
 orate Christabel Pankhurst’s achievements\, \nto celebrate the achieveme
 nts that have been made in women’s rights and to highlight the work stil
 l to be done.\n\nThe lecture will be followed by a reception in the foye
 r of University Place\, to which all attendees are invited.\n\nPlease re
