DESCRIPTION:Immigration and the future of the NHS are two of the most pro
minent issues in the 2015 election. Rarely visible in these debates is t
he fundamental role played by immigrant doctors and nurses in shaping th
e development of the NHS as one of Britain's key institutions. At the sa
me time\, healthcare is one of the most significant arenas of everyday l
ife in which people encounter ethnic diversity. \n\nDrawing on his exper
iences as a Manchester GP\, academic researcher and social activist\, th
is public conversation with Professor Aneez Esmail explores how dealing
with diversity has changed healthcare in Britain\, at a time when the NH
S is seen as facing radical new challenges and pressures.\n \nAneez Esm
ail is Professor of General Practice at the University of Manchester and
was Associate Vice-President for Social Responsibility & Equality and D
iversity between 2006-14. He has worked as a GP for almost three decades
and was Medical Advisor to the Shipman Inquiry. His pioneering research
on racial discrimination in the medical profession was recognised inter
nationally with the award of a Harkness Fellowship at Harvard Medical Sc
hool. \n\nThis event is free but booking is essential - follow the Book
