DESCRIPTION:The symphonic repertoire of the early-twentieth century is ch
aracterized by explicit depictions of the individual within the world su
rrounding it\, evident in both Nielsen’s Helios Overture and Sibelius’ F
ifth Symphony. Karelia Suite by Sibelius captures traditional Finnish fo
lk music in this memorable suite. Come and join us for this Scandinavian
adventure.\n\nPre-concert talk at 6.45pm.\n\nThe great extent to which
both Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen drew on nationalist enthusiasm at th
e beginning of the twentieth century\, embedding it into many of their w
orks\, is demonstrated in the works performed tonight. Join Professor Da
vid Fanning for a pre-concert talk\, discussing Sibelius' and Nielsen's
roles in forging individual national identities through music\; and why
a recognition of such detail is crucial in understanding the motivations
\, styles\, and wider preoccupations of composers at the beginning of th
e twentieth century. This discussion draws on the relevance of nationali
stic impulses through their music\, and how this was effectively illustr
ated in their works.\n\nTo book please visit https://tinyurl.com/ycdb2q5
