Title: A glimpse of transcendental dynamics
Abstract: In (one-dimensional) holomorphic dynamics, one studies discrete dynamical systems whose state is described by a single complex variable, and whose evolution rule is given by a holomorphic function. For example, the study of the case where the evolution rule is given by a quadratic polynomial gives rise to the famous "Mandelbrot set". Transcendental dynamics concerns the case where the evolution rule is not given by a polynomial or a rational function. The goal of this talk is to give a gentle introduction to the central objects and questions studied in the field. Most of the talk will be concerned with the discussion of a single, classical but important, example: the iteration of the function f(z) = \lambda \sin(z), where 0<\lambda< 1.
