Dr. Marion Repetti is professor at the School of Social Work, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland. Her research themes are aging, social policies, and inequalities. Her most recent book is Ageing and Migration in a Global Context: Challenges for Welfare States (Springer), co-authored with Dr. Toni Calasanti and Dr. Chris Phillipson. She recently received a grant to work on the experience of poverty in later life in Switzerland and in the United States.
Dr. Giannina Vaccaro is a senior research associate at the Swiss Centre for Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland). She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Geneva. She has more than 10 years of experience specialized in applied micro-econometrics, labour economics, education, and gender economics, and a broad overseas work experience in England, The Netherlands, Switzerland, United States and Peru.
Abstract
This project combines qualitative and quantitative approaches towards a better understanding of the contexts in which dependency becomes problematic for older people. First, using qualitative methods, our objective is to draw on diverse older people’s experiences to identify the relevant variables (individual, socioeconomic and institutional) leading dependency to become an issue in later life according to them as well as family members and carers. We also examine when this occurs and why. Second, with a quantitative approach, using administrative and collected survey data as well as a regression framework, we assess the relevance of previously identified variables in older people’s experiences of dependency. Third, using intersectional analysis methods, we aim to compare a series of samples and features that make dependency problematic and determine statistical differences across between women and men. With this study, our contribution will not only be based on identifying the main variables leading to a problematic dependency for older people but will also attempt to shed light on solutions that can help to improve their lives.
