Temporary Cluster and Social Movements: Coalition Building among the Social Movement Organizations in the Global Justice Movement
This presentation shows the network among the social movement organizations (SMOs) in the Global justice movement.
A significant amount of research has examined ‘temporary clusters’ of people who work in the same industries. Many scholars have noted that clusters (eg International trade fairs) provide opportunities to create networks among participants and provide periodic and recurrent events in which individuals can interact and learn about novel products and new technologies. This research investigates whether if the argument could apply to the social movement industry. Global justice movements are not only political activism but also opportunities to build the network for SMOs and it is a suitable case to investigate the role as temporary cluster. In this presentation, the author focuses on the protest against 2008 G8 summit and 273 NGOs in Japan.
