Title: On the epidemiological characteristics of scabies
Abstract: Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by the infestation of the skin by the Sarcopes scabiei mite, resulting in an itchy rash. Scabies affects over 400 million people worldwide each year. A rise in scabies cases has been observed in recent years throughout Western Europe. Despite the high prevalence of scabies in parts of the world and increasing scabies cases across Europe, some key epidemiological characteristics describing the spread of scabies infections have not been described, such as the serial interval – the time between symptom onset in an infector and symptom onset in an infectee – and the reproduction number – the average number of people an infected person will go on to infect.
Accurate estimates of the epidemiological characteristics describing the spread of scabies are essential for designing effective control strategies to curb disease transmission. In this talk, I will present work on estimating these key epidemiological characteristics of scabies using various mathematical methods and data sources. Finally, I will discuss the policy implications of these findings and how they can inform the design of strategies to prevent future outbreaks.
